2 boxes, 2 oversize boxes containing 31 logbooks, 1 traffic citation and arrest ticket book, and 1 mug shot book. All volumes
were created by Mexican-American Deputy Sheriff John Esparzo while on patrol in rural Cowlitz County, Washington between 1951
and 1964. One logbook, dated 1951-1952, was created by Esparzo while he served as a police officer in Walla Walla, Washington.
The logbooks record criminal activities including property crime, domestic violence, sexual assault and other events such
as suicide, fatalities, and accidents. The bulk of the logbooks are small, lined notebooks; the logbook dated 1964 contains
standardized forms for recording events and demonstrates the professionalization of police work. One logbook, dated April
1955, includes photographic negatives of a graphic, violent fatality. Collection also includes a traffic citation and arrest
ticket book which also used a standardized form to record information. Esparzo also served as the photographer for the Cowlitz
County Sheriff's Department and the collection includes one mug shot book with 48 photographs of suspects. The binder is separated
into two parts; the first includes a list of sex offenders by name, the crime they have been arrested for, and their photograph;
the second part includes a tab labeled "Completed" and includes photographs of suspects with physical descriptions, descriptions
of vehicles, information about places of residents and known associates.
